What is the significance of North Africa in the early development of Christianity?

Northern Africa was the second most developed province of the Latinized western Roman Empire. It also had the second largest city of the west, Carthage, which was very important center of the ancient learning. It school produced many brilliant christian philosophers who shaped the latinazed version of the Christianity from Greek one. Among the best of the early Christian fathers having ties to Punic Roman Africa can be named Tertullian, St. Augustine, Cyprian, and many others were involved there from St. Vitius to Caecilian. These people contributed with their writing, theology, teaching, and thinking to the rise of the Christian faith and also with it a development of the Latin church that was distinct from eastern greek and syrian churches. St. Augustine is considered a founder of the Western Christianity, since he had contributed enormously to way the West thinks. His work, the City of God helped to people overcome the attachment to old ancient pagan culture of the Rome, but look into eternal city of God in the Heaven. The people in the West until the 5th century did not accepted christian faith in large scale as did people in the East and even during the time of Augustine pagan temples and schools in Italy were along side with the Christian, which was not possible in cities like Alexandria. The Punic Christians were less persecuted than Christians in Italy, so it was heaven for many refugees from the mainland, yet to close to all civilization development of the ancient world. Without the work and though of the Augustine or Tertullian, we would look into the Christian philosophy and theology differently. These people gave the West a new identity based on latinized Christianity that was inherited by future western european nations and states, and made them a separate civilization from the eastern Mediterranean.
