religion africa

What is the most popular religion in Africa? Why?
I’m doing a project about Africa’s religion.
You would have to look regionally, and even then indigenous expressions vary from the same religions in other places. Animism is found in most areas outside the North, and is found in syncretic forms with Islam and Christianity, the two major religions. Colonialism influenced the form of Christianity, whether Anglican or Roman Catholic in many countries. Islam followed the routes of the slave trade. Coptic and Orthodox Christianity are ancient in Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia, but Orthodoxy has a large following in Uganda with an indigenous Church. The Islam of Morroco, Algeria, Libya, a,d the rest of Northwest Africa is distinctive from Wahabiism, or Sunni Islam, Shi’a made few if any inroads in Africa. The first university was an Islamic institution at Timbuctu in the heart of the Sahara, and Egypt is now the center of Islamic teaching for the world. In Nigeria the Yoruba are mainly Muslim, the Ibo mainly Christian. In Rwanda the Tutsi are mainly Christian (Catholic or Anglican) and the Hutu are mainly Muslim. Both Christians and Moslems have active programs of proselytization throughout Africa.
And NO it is not true that the missionaries care more about conversion than survival, without the missionaries in most places there would be no medical care or outside aid distribution, people would go on quietly starving or dying from disease or tribal vendettas far away from the world’s eyes.

The Nun’s Story $9.99 Fred Zinnemann’s epic drama is a splendid showcase for Audrey Hepburn, who stars as the young nun Sister Luke, who is deeply spiritual yet conflicted about whether or not she can conform to convent life. Though the film is a mesmerizing–and quite leisurely–two and a half hours, its plot is fairly simple–young Gabrielle (Hepburn) enters the convent pledging her life to God, learns the discipline… |
